Extortionists at work
Truly Terrified, Dhaka
My father, a few minutes back, received a phone call from a well-known goon of Mirpur. The guy demanded 'chada' . My dad refused, and this is how the matter stands at the moment with the fatal Sword of Damocles hanging over our WHOLE family. One of my dad's colleagues didn't take the risk he paid. He fears the next call. Another didn't, and lives in constant fear for the lives of his toddlers. Who knows how many pieces they may turn up to? I can continue recounting innumerable experiences of the same gravity. But I won't.I can, and do, blame our law enforcement agencies, our government, our built-in corruption termites. But I also realise that it is useless. I ask you, what's the USE of merely blaming? Of merely writing that I deplore these? Of merely following the well-trodden routes of our aatellectuals (intellectuals) who just condemn, make human chains, and give wordy lectures, but fall frightfully short of taking active, well thought out, USEFUL steps. In fact, if you ask me, I believe they hinder the law enforcement agencies a great deal. How? Here's how. Remember Operation Clean Heart? Remember the human rights activists who found it inhuman? I'm sure you do. But then, do you also remember the significant decrease in the number of these phone calls? The absolute lack of bodies turning up in chopped-up pieces? I'm again sure you do. Yes, some (nay, undoubtedly many) innocents were inhumanly rounded up. My heartfelt appeal goes out to all the respected aatellectuals of our society, the human rights 'martyrs', the "let's-not-give-McVeigh-the-death-penalty" supporters harsh tactics are absolutely mandatory in harsh environments. I love my sensible parents, my adorable little siblings, and if you think just because a certain bloc refuses to get their priorities straight I'm going to let them be chopped up you're dead wrong. I'll actively support the next Operation Clean Heart (if ever there's one), with all my heart and soul.
