Death of garment worker
50 buses damaged in Savar

At least 50 buses were damaged when garment workers went on a rampage at Savar over the death of their colleague in a road accident yesterday morning.

Aminur Rahman Rahim, knitting operator of Anyir Apparels Limited, was killed when a Dhaka- bound bus knocked him to death at 8:30 am yesterday at Baipail intersection in Savar. Rahim was going to office.

As news of Rahim's death spread, hundreds of garment workers from nearby Export Processing Zone (EPZ), Bangora and Baipail mills and factories went on rampage and vandalised at least 50 buses and set fire to one bus. Vehicular movement on the road was disrupted for three hours.

The garment workers also clashed with the transport workers of Baipail when they protested their action leaving 10 people injured.

The identity of the injured could not be known immediately.

A case was filed with Savar Police Station in this connection.
