Unity a means to replace govt: says Dr Kamal

Conscientious people must unite to replace the ruling alliance with a government mandated through an election free of black money and muscle power, Dr Kamal Hossain said yesterday.

"We want a change of government but the new one must come through democratic means," he said in an online interview organised by Kobita O Gaan, a cultural group operating in the Unites States and Bangladesh.

"It's a matter of great regret that none of the three parliaments since the fall of military dictator in 1990 has proved effective," Gonoforum and Oikya Prochesta President Dr Kamal said from his chamber while directly responding to questions of Bangladeshi expatriates using voice server.

As the general public are withdrawing their trust in the present government for the crisis in governance, the ruling alliance should step down showing respect to their conscientious urge and sense of responsibility and shame, he said.

"The ongoing practice of power politics is responsible for corruption, social insecurity and lawlessness," Dr Kamal said, "And a corrupt administration can not draw either domestic or foreign investment."

But the history of Bangladesh shows that no crisis is perpetual if the people are united, he said referring to the mass movement of the sixties and anti-autocratic movement of the nineties.

On his party's possible election alliance, the jurist said the Oikya Prochesta will form political alliance on the basis of principles and ideals only with those who are consistent in their words and deeds.

On the Transparency International report, he said Bangladesh is most likely to be in the list of 10 most corrupt countries, if not as the top, which too is unacceptable.

Dr Kamal said there should not be any controversy over the declaration of independence, as it is a historical fact and that there was no dispute about it during late president Ziaur Rahman's lifetime.
