Nine to die for murder in Tangail
A court here yesterday sentenced nine people to death and another to life imprisonment in a murder case.
Those awarded death penalty are Anwar Hossain, Nur Miah, Hafez, Solaiman, Minhaz Ali, Chand Miah, Yakub Ali, Hossain Ali, Abu Taher and Jonab Ali.
Abdul Halim, sentenced to life imprisonment, was also fined Tk 5,000, in default, he will have to suffer another year in jail.
Khandaker Ayub Ali and Commissioner of Tangail Pourasabha Shahidur Rahman alias Babul Siddique were acquitted as their guilt could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, the convicts attacked Haji Ziarath Ali and stabbed him to death when he was on way to the mosque for offering prayers on January 14, 2002.
The victim's son filed a murder case with Sadar Police Station against eight people. After investigation, police pressed charges against 12 people.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Aftab Uddin handed down the verdict in a crowded court.
