Police want Babul in remand

Police yesterday prayed to a Dhaka court for seven-day remand to interrogate Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul, shown as an arrestee in an attempted rape case.

Defence lawyers submitted a petition seeking bail and cancelling the remand prayer, but the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court, Dhaka fixed March 25 for hearing the issue and directed the jail authorities to produce Babul before court on the day.

In the case filed with Badda Police Station, a woman alleged she met Babul, also owner of Bangla newspaper, Dainik Jugantor, at office in Motijheel on March 17 for a job and he took her to Kuril Bishwa Road by car, aided by an armed gang. She accused Babul of forcing her into a tin-roofed house and attempting to rape her.

Police arrested Babul in his Gulshan-2 home on Sunday in a different case that dates back to the killing of dredger worker Alam Pramanik on September 1, 2003.

The Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court on Monday turned down a bail prayer for Babul over the killing charge in a third denial of bail since his arrest.

Earlier, the CMM's court rejected Babul's first bail prayer and turned down the second moved by his lawyer Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud to reconsider the judgement on sending him to Dhaka Central Jail.

The court fixed March 28 for further hearing on the bail petition in the murder case.

Barrister Rafique-Ul Huq and Rokanuddin yesterday sought bail for Babul from the High Court, but government lawyers sought time for hearing, as they said they were not aware of the case.

The division bench of Justice Awlad Ali and Justice Abdul Awal scheduled the bail petition hearing for today.
