BSF patrol boat rams trawler of Hindu devotees

A trawler carrying 80 Hindu devotees capsized in the river Ichhamoti after being rammed by a patrol boat of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) near Debhata, Sreepur last night.

All the passengers, however, survived the accident either by swimming ashore or by being rescued, police said.

Two of the passengers, Prahlad Ghosh, 15, and Sanjay Biswas, 23, were injured in the accident and admitted to Shakhipur Hospital.

The devotees went to the river to witness the immersion of the images of goddess Durga on the last day of Durga Puja yesterday when the BSF patrol boat rammed their trawler.

They alleged that the BSF intentionally caused the accident.

Trawler owner Zahid Hasan said his vessel was well within Bangladeshi waters when it was sunk by the BSF boat.

Sources said several Bangladeshi boats gathered for the immersion ceremony on the river, which, for the most part, is controlled by the BSF.
