Chittagong Art College became vibrant as hundreds of students, former and present, gathered at the inaugural ceremony of a seven-day reunion titled 'Srijan Swajan Sammilan' last week.

The festivity and enthusiasm of the students brought the college campus at Badsha Mia Road in Chatteshwari back to life.

Inaugurating the reunion on Thursday, Food Minister Abdullah Al Noman recalled with a sense of nostalgia that he carried a 20-ft mural created by Sabih Ul Alam, the founding principal of Chittagong Art College, to Dhaka while joining a student organisation's central convocation in his student life.

The minister assured that allout support and necessary assistance would be provided for the development of the college, aiming to build it up as an institute.

Chittagong city Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury was present as special guest and reunion committee convener Ahmed Newaj presided.

Founder-principal Sabih Ul Alam, Principal Rita Datta, artist Rafiqun Nabi, Prothom Alo resident editor Abul Momen, Chittagong University art department President Dr Shahriar Talukder, and artists Pranab Das and Rafiq Siddiqui, among others, reminisced about the days gone by.

The speakers called for setting up an art gallery and an art village in Chittagong.

Nine late artists and 24 former students were awarded medals on the second day of the reunion.

Commerce Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury attended the award giving ceremony as chief guest.

He disclosed a government decision to display famous artworks of the country in the trade fairs abroad.

"It would expose our local artists to the world market," the minister said, adding that Bangladeshi paintings are on high demand in the present world.
