Govt plans legal action against Sitakunda ship-breaker

The Department of Environment (DoE) is preparing for legal action against the ship-breakers for scraping tankers without taking precautions that lead to the gushing out of highly toxic gas and pollution of a vast area of Sitakunda.

DoE, Chittagong Director Mosharraf Hossain yesterday told The Daily Star that Silvia Ship Breaking Yard has already been served with a show-cause notice and asked to come up with an explanation by tomorrow.

"... If the reply of the ship-breaking yard is not satisfactory, we will take legal action against them," the director said.

A senior chemist from the DoE in Dhaka arrived in Chittagong yesterday to launch an inquiry into the incident with the assistance of the DoE officials in Chittagong, he said.

Sources said senior chemist Shahajahan Khan and Inspector Abdul Khaleq of the DoE, Chittagong, went to visit the yard and adjoining Kadam Rasul Jahanabad area yesterday.

They were scheduled to inspect the place of occurrence and collect samples for tests, the sources said, adding that measures would be taken on the basis of the report.
