SL spinner banned for four months

Sri Lanka's cricket authorities on Saturday banned Test spinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi for four months following his involvement in a car crash, ruling him out of the upcoming home series against England.

The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka said the indefinite ban, imposed on the spinner last month after his involvement in the crash in which a woman was killed, was turned into four months ending mid-December.

England will arrive here on November 13 for three one-day internationals and as many Test matches.

The spinner will be on probation thereafter for two years, officials said.

"This means any misdemeanour by him and he will be out for two years," a board official said.

Last month, the board decided to prevent him from taking part in any matches until the completion of an internal investigation into his conduct.

Lokuarachchi, a newcomer in the national team, was released on bail of 7,500 rupees (77 dollars) last month by a local magistrate. He has not been charged pending an investigation.

The 21-year-old spinner has so far figured in just three Tests and five one-day internationals.

Lokuarachchi was at the wheel of a car borrowed from another player and was returning home after a late-night party when the crash occurred in the district of Gampaha.

A woman waiting for a bus was killed and her son was injured in the crash. The cricketer had suffered minor injuries thanks to the activation of an airbag in the car, police said.

The board officials said the player could have faced a ban of up to three years, but the authorities had decided on a lesser punishment.
