Salinity a serious problem

President tells IFC members

President Iajuddin Ahmed yesterday said salinity is a serious problem of the country and called for an active participation of the scientists and academics to create awareness among the people about its effects.

"People should be well-informed of the problem and their awareness and participation in solving it are essential," the president said when a 6-member delegation of the International Farrakka Committee made a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban here.

Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University and Editor of the IFC's publication national documentation on the problems of Arsenic and Farrakka, Prof Jasim Uddin Ahmed led the delegation.

The president suggested the committee that it could make a video film on the serious effects of the problems and aware the people of the situation.

The delegation members presented a copy of the publication to the president and apprised him of the Farrakka and arsenic problems.

They suggested remedies of the problems, which require coordinated efforts of scientists, planners and academics.

The publication, they said, contained valuable articles and recommendations of experts on the related subjects and hoped that it would help inspire others to contribute towards solving the pressing problems of the country.

Iajuddin thanked the International Farakka Committee for bringing out a valuable publication.

Other members of the delegation were IFC chairman Atiqur Rahman Yusufzai Salu, Secretary General Syed Tipu Sultan, national advisor Nazma Ahmed and members of the editorial board Prof Syed Safiullah and Engineer Dr SI Khan and.
