2 AL groups clash
At least 20 persons were injured as two groups associated with the ruling Awami League clashed to take control over two human hauler stands at Dak Bungalow intersection in Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat on Thursday night, said police.
The injured from both the sides were taken to the upazila health complex. Of them, six were transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
The clash ensued between the supporters of Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid, suspended president of the upazila unit Jubo League, and Shirin Akter, chairman of Sadar Union Parishad and who worked for the AL.
Shirin has enmity with Harun as he is an accused in a case filed for killing her husband Khan Zahid Hasan, former acting general secretary of the upazila unit AL, said Fakirhat police Officer-in-Charge Shamsher Ali.
At first, a scuffle broke out between a supporter of Shirin with a supporter of Harun at the intersection Thursday evening, said detectives.
Following the incident, the two groups equipped with sharp weapons clashed.
Neither Harun nor Shirin could be reached over the phone for their comments.
