18 injured in Natore, Patuakhali post-poll violence
At least 18 people were injured and five houses and a campaign office of Awami League vandalised during the post-poll violence in Natore and Patuakhali today.
Sporadic clashes between the supporters of chairman candidates affiliated with ruling Awami League and BNP left eight people injured in Baraigram upazila of Natore.
In Patuakhali, at least 10 people were injured when the supporters of BNP and AL rebel candidates attacked on AL-blessed aspirant in Dumki upazila.
A campaign office of AL and five houses were vandalised during the clash in Natore while a shop was burnt in Patuakhali.
NATORE
The clash first erupted around 12:30am when the supporters of BNP-blessed chairman candidate Ekramul Alam vandalised the election office of AL-backed candidate Mizanur Rahman at Panchbaria village after winning the election, said Krishna Mohan Sarker, a sub-inspector of Baraigram Police Station.
At least two people sustained injuries when the supporters of the both candidates engaged in chase and counter-chase following the vandalism, reports our Natore correspondent quoting the police official.
Later, the stick-wielding supporters of both the candidates, engaged in sporadic clashes around 8:00am.
They fought pitched battle for nearly an hour, leaving six more people injured.
Of the injured, two were undergoing treatment at Baraigram Upazila Health Complex.
The identities of the victims could not be known immediately.
During the clash, they also vandalised five houses of the both groups.
On information police went to the spot and brought the situation under control around 9:00am.
PATUAKHALI
The clash ensued when AL rebel candidate Golam Sarwar along with BNP-backed candidate Shahadat Hossain attacked the supporters of chairman elect Tariquzzaman Moni affiliated with ruling AL at Chhoto Digahi Union Office in Sadar upazila around 8:00am.
Both the groups used sticks during nearly half-an-hour-clash that left 10 supporters of Moni injured, reports our Patuakhali correspondent.
Seven of the injured were rushed to Patuakhali General Hospital.
No cases has been filed in this connection till this afternoon, said Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station
In separate incident, a grocery shop of one Narayan Das of Hindu community was torched at Pangashia village in Dumki upazila.
The supporters of Jamaat-backed chairman candidate Abdul Wahab set fire to the shop around 3:00am as he denied to vote for him, Narayan claimed.
