151 opposition men held in 5 dists
Joint forces have arrested 151 opposition men in overnight drives in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Comilla, Bogra and Lalmonirhat.
Of the detainees, 65 activists are in Chittagong, 39 in Comilla, 23 in Lalmonirhat, 15 in Bogra and nine in Rajshahi, our district correspondents reported.
CHITTAGONG
65 BNP, Jamaat and Shibir men were arrested in Sitakunda, Mirsharai, Satkania, Lohagara, Fatikchhari, Patia, Anowara and Chandlaish upazila of the district, said Shah Alam, officer of National Security Intelligence in Chittagong.
Of the detainees, 10 activists are of BNP, 16 of Jamaat and 39 of Shibir, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
Joint forces conducted the overnight drives on charge of allegation and suspicion of creating anarchy in the areas.
COMILLA
Joint forces arrested 39 activists of BNP, Jamaat and Shibir in overnight drives in the district.
Of them, 23 are activists of Jamaat and Shibir while 16 are BNP men, said Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Special Branch of police in Comilla (Sadar circle).
The opposition men were held on charges of arson, vandalism and crude bomb explosions during recent blockades and hartals enforced by the BNP-led 18-party combine, said the OC.
LALMONIRHAT
Joint forces detained 23 activists of BNP and its front organizations at Mohendranagar area in Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila in a four-hour drive since 11.30 pm yesterday.
Jamir Uddin, officer-in charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station, confirmed the detention saying that they were arrested for their involvement in torching a truck at
Mohendranagar intersection yesterday evening.
BOGRA
Police arrested 15 opposition men in overnight drives in seven out of nine upazilas of the district, said Gaziur Rahman, assistant superintendent of police (Sadar circle).
The arrests were made on charges of vandalism and torching vehicles and residences of Awami League office, houses and government offices since March 3 this year, said the ASP.
RAJSHAHI
Joint forces, comprising police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh, arrested nine BNP and Jamaat men from different places in Boalia and Motihar police stations.
The arrests were made on suspicion that the detainees might commit subversive activities, said Proloy Chichim, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
Of them, Md Shahjahan Ali, a BNP councilor of ward-29, and his associate Aminul Islam Rubel were held from Dasmari area in Motihar.
The identities of the other arrestees could not be known immediately.
