15 journos hurt at JPC in AL attack
Around 15 journalists were injured when pro-Awami League activists hurled brick chips at them during a demonstration at Jatiya Press Club premises in the capital demanding release of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman and reopening of media outlets.
The pro-BNP factions of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) were holding a scheduled programme inside the press club, to press home their demands.
Around 12:15pm, over 100 activists of AL and Shramik League, who were crossing the road in front of the press club in procession, started hurling brick chips at the pro-BNP newsmen, leaving at least 15 of them injured.
Meantime, pro-AL factions of BFUJ and DUJ reached the press club premises and pushed the agitating newsmen inside the building.
Mofizul Islam, treasurer of the pro-AL faction of DUJ, was injured when the rival group threw brick chips at the faction.
Ruhul Amin Gazi, president of the BFUJ faction, claimed that they were holding the scheduled demonstration peacefully inside the press club when the processionists hurled brick chips at them.
Both the factions of the journalists' bodies later took position in and outside the press club and chanted slogans.
The situation became normal around 1:50pm.
