12 sued, one held in Lalmonirhat
A case was lodged with Aditmari Police Station on Saturday night, accusing 12 criminals of beating up several girls of Sarpukur High School at Sarpukur village of the upazila on the day.
Headmaster Abu Taleb Miah of the school filed the case against four named and eight unnamed delinquents of the village. The named accused in the case are Polash Islam, 23, Babu Miah, 22, Saiful Islam 21, and Atiqul Islam 20.
Police arrested one Sayeed Hossain, 24, of Harati village in Sadar upazila yesterday morning, suspecting his involvement in the incident.
Students of the school yesterday boycotted classes demanding immediate arrest of the criminals, who beat up the schoolgirls.
District police superintendent visited the school yesterday noon. He assured the teachers, and students and locals of taking stern action against the criminals.
Delinquents beat up several schoolgirls in front the Primary Teachers Training Institute at Saptibari village when they were returning home from a science fair held at a nearby village yesterday afternoon.
Injured by the criminals, six girl students of Class IX of Sarpukur High School were admitted to the upazila health complex.
The criminals intercepted 14 girl students of the school when they were returning home from the Interschool Science and Technology Fair held at Manosika Bhaban at Khatapara village in the upazila, said police and the victim girls.
They beat up the students with wooden sticks, leaving six girls injured.
Demanding action, the school students barricaded Lalmonirhat-Burimari Highway on the spot from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.
They withdraw the blockade as police assured them of taking necessary action against the attackers.
"A group of youths disturbed the girls of our school and took their photographs on the fair premise. As the girls complained to the fair organisers, the criminals got furious and they attacked our students on the road," said Anwarul Islam, a teacher of the school.
