12 get life for Kushtia UP chairman killing
A court here on Wednesday sentenced 12 people to life term imprisonment for killing Jamil Hossain Bachchu, chairman of Koiya union parishad in Kushtia in 2009.
The judge acquitted 23 other accused as the charges brought against them could not be proved.
Eleven convicts were fined Tk 25,000 each, in default, to suffer rigorous imprisonment for six months more while the other convict, Ibrahim, was fined Tk three lakh, in default, to suffer RI for two years more.
Judge of Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Md. Akhter Hossain handed down the verdict in a crowded courtroom in the morning. Twenty-three witnesses out of 44 were examined by the tribunal.
The 12 convicts are Ibrahim, 48, Habil, 32, Shamim, 30, Islam, 30, Zia, 35, Dablu, 40, Saheb, 50, Zahangir alais Babu, 38, Razzak, 36, Arif Khan Mithu, 32, Manik, 28, and Mukul Hossain, 30.
All of them were present at the court when the judge delivered the verdict.
The prosecution story in short is that the accused gunned down Jamail Hossain Bachchu of Kumar Khali upazila in Kushtia at Hatir Shako rail line of village Monohorpur at around 4.00pm while he was going towards his residence from his office on July 25, 2009.
His brother Ziaul Islam, current chairman of Koya UP, filed a case with Kumarkhali PS on July 26.
Investigation officer (IO) of the case SI Nasiruddin submitted charge sheet accusing 35 people.
Being sensational, the case was transferred to the Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal on July 16, 2013.
