Wounded Sirajganj Jamaat leader dies in custody
A local leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami died in police custody early today after he was detained bullet-wounded in a crackdown to nab saboteurs from Sirajganj’s Ullapara upazila.
Protesting the death of the Jamaat leader, the party called a daylong hartal Wednesday in Sirajganj district.
The victim was identified as Saidul Islam, 40, son of Bashed Pramanik and Rokon of the Ullapara upazila unit of the party, our Sirajganj correspondent reports quoting the police.
Police cracked down in Pauka Ullapara area yesterday afternoon to arrest culprits involved in torching of a three-wheeler on January 31 last month.
A “shootout” took place between police and supporters of the Jamaat during the raid at around 5:00pm (on Sunday), said Tajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ullapara Police Station.
“After the shootout, Saidul was detained from the spot shot in the leg along with three petrol bombs in his possession. He was admitted to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital under custody,” he said.
Saidul succumbed to his injuries around 2:30am early today, said Dr Faridul Islam, resident medical officer (RMO) of Sirajganj Sadar Hospital.
