Lalu Prasad gets 14 years in jail
Senior Indian opposition leader and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was yesterday sentenced to 14 years in jail and slapped with a fine of Rs 60 lakh by a special court in a corruption case.
The case relates to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore, meant for purchasing fodder for cattle from a government treasury in early 1990s when Yadav was chief minister of Bihar state.
Special court judge Shiv Pal Singh awarded two sentences of seven years each to 69-year-old Yadav under Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Corruption Act.
Prabhat Kumar, Yadav's lawyer, told the media that he will appeal in a higher court against the judgment.
This was the fourth fodder scam case in which Yadav was accused of swindling of money from the Dumka treasury between December 1995 and January 1996.
Yadav was earlier convicted in the first fodder scam case in 2013 and sentenced to jail for five years.
In a second case, he was convicted in 2017, he was sentenced to three-and-half years in jail and in a third case, to jail for five years.
Yadav is already in jail in eastern Indian city of Ranchi jail since last December after his conviction in two similar graft cases which prevents from contesting elections and holding public office for five years.
