Woman who woke up on way to morgue dies
She had survived for around 26 hours after she was declared dead. But she could not make it for long, as she passed away this afternoon, leaving everyone in dark about herself.
The unidentified woman, aged around 45, breathed her last around 4:00pm at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Around 2:00pm yesterday, a doctor of at the hospital declared the motionless woman dead and issued a death certificate. In a bizarre turn of events, she shook her hands and legs three hours later while being taken to morgue for an autopsy.
Confirming the woman's death, DMCH Deputy Director Dr Mushfiqur Rahman told The Daily Star that a four-member committee headed by Prof Enamul Karim of medicine department has been formed to investigate Thursday's incident.
"The committee has been asked to submit the report within three working days," he added.
On Thursday, an honorary female doctor had declared the woman dead when she was found to have no heartbeat, physical movement and blood pressure.
"In preliminary investigation, we came to know that the doctor declared her dead through casual testing system but she did not use the ECG machine to confirm her death though the building has three ECG machines,” Mushfiqur came up with the explanation.
"We will take action against the doctor following the report by the investigation team," he added.
The woman was undergoing treatment on the ground of the seventh floor of the building near the lift house since she was admitted to the hospital.
She had no attendants and was not provided any treatment other than an intravenous saline drip and some injections, patients in her ward alleged.
After she woke up from the death that triggered reactions, she was hurriedly shifted to a bed at Ward No-802.
Doctors at the ward told The Daily Star that due to lack of attendants, she did not receive any lab test to diagnose her diseases. They suggested some tests for her on that night.
DMCH sources said the woman suffering from Malnutrition was found lying on the footpath on Tuesday when a drive was being carried out to evict illegal, roadside shops adjacent to the emergency unit of the hospital.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
Assistant sub-inspector Haider Ali of DMCH police camp said no one came to claim the body till 7:00pm.
