Winter sets in
City dwellers have begun feeling the sweet chill in the air often seen shrouded with fog in early mornings and late at nights ahead of the beginning of the winter season.
According to the Bangla calendar, two-month-long winter begins with the arrival of Paush and continues until the end of Magh, and so it is likely to bring in a mild weather in mid- December, which would become coldest in January.
However, a significant drop in temperature has already been noticed across the country. People in the northern districts have experienced as low as 10 degree Celsius.
In the capital, the average temperature is still above 20 degree Celsius. The met office recorded 23.9 degree Celsius in Dhaka yesterday. The lowest temperature was recorded in Rajshahi at 10.2 degree Celsius.
“Initial days of this winter will not be very cold in the capital. A cold wave may sweep the city at the end of December,” said a forecasting officer of Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Dhaka.
The weather will become colder in January with several cold waves sweeping the country, he added.
Winter is never very harsh here and treated as the season of festivity. Kitchen markets have been selling winter vegetables in abundance for a couple of weeks.
Small vendors have begun selling rice cakes and date juice by the roads in Dhaka.
Having winter at the doorstep, a good number of people, especially those belonging to low and fixed income groups, are crowding makeshift shops in the capital as well as in other parts of the country to buy warm clothes and blankets.
