A week-long fair, known as Moni Mela, began yesterday at Susong Durgapur in the district, marking the 23rd death anniversary of Comrade Moni Singh.
Moni Singhis the founder of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB). He was adviser to the provisional government of Bangladesh during the Liberation War.
December 31 is the death anniversary of the comrade.
The programme, attended by communist leaders and people from different areas of district, began with placing wreaths at the Tong Memorial that commemorates the supreme sacrifices of people in the Tong movement launched by Moni Singh to realise the rights of landless people.
It was followed by a colourful procession. People carrying banners and portraits of Moni Singh paraded different roads of Durgapur pourasabha area, chanting various slogans for government land to the landless and ensuring workers' rights.
A discussion meeting was held with Durgaproshad Tiwary, convenor of Mela Udjapon Committee in the chair.
Among others, ex-president of CPB Manzurul Ahsan Khan, Moni Singh's son Dr Dibalok Singh and president of Netrakona district CPB Abdul Motalab, spoke.
