Wall collapse kills 1 as rain cripples Ctg
A construction worker was killed and three others were injured in a wall collapse triggered by heavy rain that submerged most part of Chittagong city today causing misery for locals.
Chittagong met office recorded 211.2 mm rainfall in 24 hours till 9:00am today, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting Nur Mohammad, duty assistant of the met office.
Triggered by heavy rain started since yesterday, a boundary wall collapsed on a tin-shed house in Rahman Nagar area around 3:00am, leaving four construction workers injured, said Jasimuddin, deputy assistant director of Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Informed by locals, fire fighters rushed to the spot around 4:00am and rescued the workers from under the debris.
Md Aslam, 22, hailed from Chapainawabganj, was declared dead when he was taken to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital.
The three injured -- Md Mamun, 18, and Shefajul, 20, and Md Khokon, 22, are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Amid the torrential rain, the authorities closed most of the schools in the port city for today considering sufferings to the students and their guardians.
On the other hand, local administration and police asked residents of Motijharna hilly area to take shelter to safe places fearing landslides in the area.
The heavy rainfall submerged one-third of the port city in knee-deep to waist-deep water yesterday, causing immense sufferings to its dwellers.
The rain is likely to continue for couple of more days due to a monsoon wind in the Bay and Chittagong port has been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 3, the met office said yesterday.
Roads, lanes and bi-lanes in Bakalia, Bahaddarhat, Katalganj, Muradpur, Shulakbahar, Nasirabad, Bayezid, Sholashahar, Chawk Bazar, Halishahar, Agrabad and some other low-lying areas in the city were inundated.
The waterlogging again exposed the poor drainage system in the city.
