The ruling Awami League today claimed that the fifth phase of upazila elections took place in a peaceful manner as the Election Commission has taken all necessary measures.
AL Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak said this at a press conference after 4:00pm at the party president’s Dhanmondi office in the capital.
Election to 73 upazila parishads took place between 8:00am and 4:00pm today amid allegations of widespread vote rigging by the ruling party men.
Responding to a query about BNP’s allegation that the EC has failed to hold fair election, the AL leader replied that the commission has successfully conducted the polls and the government has duly cooperated to make the efforts successful.
“There is no scope to raise question about the Election Commission as all elections that were held under the incumbent commission were free, fair and neutral.”

Nanak said, “Though the election commissioner holds a conditional post, he is not an isolated person. His comment is a reflection of countrymen’s feelings.”
The former state minister urged the BNP to return to the path of democracy shunning of way of conflicts for the sake of the country’s development and stability.
