How Chinese people express love
I Love You highlights how “I love you” is said in Mandarin, the national language of China, as well as in Cantonese, one of the dominating local dialects spoken in South China and among overseas Chinese.
In traditional Chinese culture, people are restrained from saying “I love you” in most situations.
Expression of love are silently translated into devoted commitment of family duty and enduring parenthood — giving the best to their beloved ones.
Saying “I love you” out loud is most common amongst the younger generation due to their greater exposure to Western culture and education.
But nowadays Chinese culture has already adopted various ways of showing one’s affection to another. Love can not only be felt, but also heard widely among Chinese people in Mandarin and Cantonese.
