US assistant secretary for pressurising Myanmar to resolve Rohingya issue
US Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne C Richard today said the international community needs to put more pressure on Myanmar to resolve Rohingya issue saying it is Myanmar’s responsibility to take back its nationals.
She made the remarks while talking to a select group of journalists after wrapping up her four-day visit to Bangladesh.
The US assistant secretary, however, did not favour settling the Rohingya refuges to a third country.
“Our dream is to see they are given a peaceful place to live. I know it is possible but that’s a dream,” said Anne Richard, who came to Bangladesh for the first time.
Responding to a question, she said the Rohingya refuges in the two camps in Cox’s Bazar district prefer to stay in Bangladesh despite having not ideal living condition.
