UN stresses dialogue among political parties
In a meeting with President Abdul Hamid last week, the UN chief expressed his regret at the failure of political parties to reach an agreement that would have allowed for inclusive elections in January.
Ban Ki-moon emphasised the importance of engaging the extra-parliamentary opposition and encouraged progress in social and political reconciliation.
The secretariat of the UN chief and the UN office in Dhaka said this at a statement today.
The statement added that the UN chief and the president also discussed Bangladesh's achievements in disaster risk reduction, lowering mortality rates and reducing extreme poverty at the meeting at UN headquarters on June 19.
The secretary-general thanked the president for Bangladesh’s contributions to UN peacekeeping operations.
President Hamid informed the Secretary-General that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would participate in the Climate Summit in September, statement said.
