Tough movement if power, gas prices go up: JP
Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad today vowed to launch a tough movement if the government increases the prices of power and gas “whimsically”.
“We have heard that the government is planning to increase the prices of power and gas from January. But, we want to ask the government not to do so. It will add suffering to the poor people,” he said. “Otherwise, we will walk out of parliament and wage a movement on the street.”
The government can bring the Tk 14,000 crore which has been siphoned off and use in the sector as subsidy, said Ershad, who is also a especial envoy to the prime minister.
Ershad was addressing a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka this afternoon marking the party’s 29th founding anniversary.
Placing 18-point demand, he said Jatiya Party wants to secure victory in 151 seats in the next parliamentary election.
Hundreds of supporters of the party gathered at the rally venue.
The JP leaders and activists carrying posters, placards and banners throng the spot, ignoring the daylong hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami.
