Test cops’ mental eligibility before providing firearms
Policemen who need to carry firearms must undergo mental tests to determine whether they are capable of maintaining sanity, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chief said today.
"They should be tested well to determine their mental fitness before they receive firearms," Mizanur Rahman said while visiting Shah Alam, whom a sub-inspector of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station shot out of personal grudge and later branded as a mugger.
Alam is undergoing treatment at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor).
Anwar Hossain, an SI of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, shot Shah Alam in both legs from close range in Taltola area around Sunday midnight, and tried to portray him as a mugger and a gunfight victim.
According the victim, the SI was having an extramarital affair with Shah Alam’s wife, Shanta. The police officer got furious when Alam threatened him that he would disclose the matter to Anwar's wife.
The national rights body chief visited Shah Alam today around 11:00am. He spoke with the victim and then briefed journalists on rights violation by law enforcers.
"Two years ago, we came to the hospital to visit Limon," he told reporters referring to the youth who was shot and maimed by a team of Rapid Action Battalion in 2011. "Today, we came to visit the victims of a similar case."
Mizanur Rahman also criticised the statements of Asaduzzaman Khan, the state minister for home, for terming the incident of Limon an accident.
In an apparent attempt to save the law enforcers responsible for maiming Limon Hossain, the state minister yesterday termed the shooting of the innocent boy an accident.
