Tazreen MD, chairman sent to jail
A Dhaka court today sent Tazreen Fashions Managing Director Delwar Hossain and its Chairman Mahmuda Akter to jail after rejecting their bail petition in a case over the devastating fire that killed 112 workers in 2012.
The court passed the order, nearly three hours after Delwar and his wife Mahmuda surrendered before it seeking bail in the case.
The surrender came as a lower court had earlier levelled them as fugitive and issued arrest warrant against them in the case.
After hearing both the prosecution and the defence, Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam sent the accused couple to jail around 12:20pm.
During today's trial, around 500 workers of Tazreen Fashions Ltd chanted slogans on the court premises demanding death penalty to the factory MD and chairman.
Earlier on December 22 last year, police pressed homicide charges against 13 people including Delwar and Mahmuda in the case.
The accused were also charged with mischief by fire and causing grievous hurt and death by negligence.
At least 112 workers, mostly women, were killed and scores wounded in the country's worst industrial blaze at Tazreen Fashions in Ashulia on the outskirts of the capital on November 24, 2012.
Ashulia police filed a case on November 25 in connection with the incident.
The other 11 charge-sheeted accused are: Factory Manager Abdur Razzak, Quality Manager Shahiduzzaman Dulal, Production Manager Mobarak Hossain Monju, Manager (admin) Md Dulal Uddin, engineer Mahbubul Morshed, store-in-charge Hamidul Islam and Md Al Amin, security in-charge Md Al Amin and Anisur Rahman, security guard Md Rana, and loader Shamim Mia.
Of them, only security-in-charge Anisur is now behind bars.
Tazreen owners Delwar and Mahmuda, Factory Manager Razzak, Quality Manager Dulal, engineer Morshed and Production Manager Monju have been shown as fugitives in the charge sheet.
The six other accused got bail from the HC and the lower court on different dates.
