Limon's ordeal and the State

THE optimists in Bangladesh would hope and pray that Limon's ordeal has perhaps come to an end, now that all the criminal cases filed against him have been withdrawn by the state. Limon, a young man, has been a subject of public discussion through sheer misfortune, by a suspect lethal action of a state organ that has left him crippled for the rest of his life. Fortunately, however, the incident has not crippled his spirit as he is reportedly...

The Bangladesh government should order an independent investigation and prosecute the Rapid Action Battalion members responsible for shooting and maiming Limon Hossain, Human Rights Watch said today. Limon's ordeal ends

AFTER more than three years of hell, the tribulation of a hapless boy of 19 has come to an end. While Limon's legal battle might be over we wonder whether he has got justice. Can the state recompense his losses in any meaningful way? On the brighter side, Limon should consider himself lucky he has lost a leg only; more unfortunate victims of police coercion are not alive to tell their tale. Limon was made the target of deliberate victimisation...

No arms found, arms case filed

The firearm and machetes, shown recovered from Limon's possession by Rapid Action Battalion, were actually found near the spot of the 'shootout' incident in Chhaturia village of Rajapur upazila, said Lt Col Monirul Haque, Jhalakathi Rab's commanding officer. There is a misunderstanding about the recovery of the firearm and other weapons in that incident, stated Monirul adding, “Indeed, those were found in the area from where Limon was arrested.” Ariful Islam, investigation officer of Rajapur Police Station in two Rab cases, also admitted the weapons were not recovered from Limon's possession. Though he did not possess any of the weapons, Rab sued him for possessing illegal firearm. During an operation on March 23...
