Mysterious plumes on Mars stump scientists

Mysterious plumes on Mars stump scientists

A mystery is brewing on Mars: Amateur astronomers spotted enormous plumes erupting off the Red Planet's surface, leaving scientists puzzled, reports Space.com. More than 155 miles (250 kilometers) high and hundreds of miles across, the baffling plumes were spotted by amateur astronomers in the spring of 2012. The plumes reflect sunlight, which means they could be made of water ice, carbon dioxide ice or dust. But clouds made of those materials would be hard to explain with current models of the Martian atmosphere, Space.com says quoting scientists. Images of Mars...

4.4byr-old Martian meteorite is piece of planet's crust: Study

New research on a unique 4.4 billion-year-old Martian meteorite reveals it to be a piece of planet Mars, the first of its kind to reach Earth, reports the International Business Times. The Brown University study suggests the Martian landscape is made largely of such composite rocks rather than the igneous type. NWA 7034, the meteorite...

Planet hosts giant ring system

Planet hosts giant ring system

Astronomers say they have discovered a planet with a gigantic ring system that is 200 times larger than that around Saturn. It is the first such structure detected around a planet beyond our Solar System. The researchers say there are probably more than 30 rings, each measuring tens of millions of kilometres in diameter. The findings...

Lost Beagle2 probe found 'intact' on Mars

The missing Mars robot Beagle2 has been found on the surface of the Red Planet, apparently intact. High-resolution images taken from orbit have identified its landing location, and it looks to be in one piece. The UK-led probe tried to make a soft touchdown on the dusty world on Christmas Day, 2003, using parachutes and...

Nasa, Nissan team up to vehicles for earth, Mars

It’s turning out to be a stellar year for the future of autonomous driving as Nasa's Ames Research Center and Nissan North America announced they’re teaming up to develop their own self-driving vehicles that can navigate streets on earth and the surface of Mars. The five-year R&D partnership was announced on Thursday, and engineers...

Methane 'belches' detected on Mars

Methane 'belches' detected on Mars

Nasa's Curiosity rover has detected methane on Mars - a gas that could hint at past or present life on the planet. The robot sees very low-level amounts constantly in the background, but it also has monitored a number of short-lived spikes that are 10 times higher. Methane on the Red Planet is intriguing because...

Mars rover finds stronger potential for life

Mars rover finds stronger potential for life

For lifeless chemical compounds to organise themselves into something alive, scientists generally agree, three sets of things must be present: Standing water and an energy source. Five basic elements: carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, phosphorus and nitrogen. And time, lots of time. In its search for environments where life might have started on Mars, the Curiosity rover has found...

Comet Siding Spring set to whizz close to Mars

Comet Siding Spring set to whizz close to Mars

Scientists should get a grandstand view of a comet on Sunday when it makes a dramatic flyby of Mars. The icy object, known as Siding Spring, will miss the Red Planet by what is - in astronomical terms - just a hair's breadth, or 139,500km (87,000 miles). Satellites round Mars and rovers on its surface...

Modi congratulates ISRO scientists over Mars mission success

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) over the success of Mars Orbiter Mission, reports the Indian daily The Times of India. "Aaj MOM ka Mangal se milan ho gaya, aur Mangal ko MOM mil gayi," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said congratulating scientists from the Isro for...

Mars Maven mission arrives in orbit

Mars Maven mission arrives in orbit

The US space agency's (Nasa) latest Mars satellite has arrived successfully in orbit above the planet. Hurtling through space for the past 10 months, the Maven craft slammed on the brakes by firing its thrusters. The 33-minute burn removed sufficient speed to allow the satellite to be captured by Mars' gravity. We made it to Mars...
