40 RMG workers fall sick in Badda demo

At least 40 workers of a garment factory who were observing a hunger strike since yesterday in an ongoing demonstration in capital's Badda area fell sick on Wednesday. Several hundred readymade garment factory workers of Toba Group started demonstrating in front of their factory there on Eid day yesterday. Tazreen chairperson sent to jail

A Dhaka court today sent Mahmuda Akter, chairperson of Tazreen Fashions Ltd, to jail rejecting her bail petition in a homicide case. Senior Judicial Magistrate Kazi Shahidul Islam passed the order when Mahmuda sought the bail through her lawyer after surrendering before the court.   On March 20, the District and Sessions Judge's Court cancelled Mahmuda's bail and asked her to surrender in 15 days before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court that granted her bail. A Dhaka court yesterday warned of legal action against a magistrate for an "incomplete" order on a bail petition of Tazreen Fashions chairperson in a homicide case. The case was filed over a deadly fire at the factory in November 2012, which killed 112 workers. Judge Md Abdul Majid of the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge's Court asked Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam to explain in 15 days why legal action would not be taken against him for his February 9 order. Owners land in jail, finally

A Dhaka court yesterday sent Tazreen Fashions owner Delwar Hossain and his wife to jail in a case over the country's worst factory fire that killed 112 workers. Delwar, managing director, and Mahmuda Akter, chairman of Tazreen Fashions, are the first garment factory owners to be prosecuted for factory fire. The couple turned themselves in to the court to seek bail yesterday, after being at large for more than a year following the November 2012 fire in their Ashulia factory.
