Sylhet Divisional Finale of English in Schools
With the spontaneous participation of nearly 500 students, the divisional finale of The Daily Star-Robi English in Schools was held in Sylhet. Students of class VI to X from 25 schools of three districts -- Sylhet, Sunamganj and Moulvibazar -- participated in the event.
Scholarshome School and College, the venue of the event, wore a festive look with the banners of EIS, along with participants in blue T-shirts. The registration opened in the morning. Once the registration procedures ended, students sat for a test, which included grammatical questions, sentence completions, fill-in-the-gaps and a separate listening test.
Mohammad Bukhari Khan, a participant said, “Our class teachers announced about the programme in our classes. I love participating in this sort of programmes. I regularly read The Daily Star and follow its weekly English in School page.”
Another participant, Tapashi Debnath, who came from Sunamganj, said, “The EIS page is interesting and we learn a lot from the page. I think students from rural areas mainly get benefited from this page.”
Nusrat M. Jahan, a guest teacher at Bluebird School and College, said, “We are part of the EIS programme at Bluebird. We distributed the page in each of the classrooms and kept the page in our library so that students can access those any time. I think this type of projects are helpful, especially for Bangla medium students.”
Soon after the test was completed, students were provided with lunch. The enthusiasm of students and eagerness of teachers and guardians added life to the event. The cultural programme and prize giving ceremony began following the lunch. Students from participating schools performed dance, recitation and songs. Later came the announcement of results.
