Sust teacher stabbed by student

A departmental head of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) was stabbed by his student on the campus this morning.

Professor Niaj Ahmed, head of social work department, was in his office when a masters student, Rois Ahmed, attacked him with a sharp weapon around 10:00am, said Prof Kabir Hossain, former president of Sust Teachers’ Association.

Hearing hue and cry, students and teachers recued Prof Ahmed and rushed him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital where he is undergoing treatment, Hossain said.

Rois was handed over to the police, our Syhlet correspondent reports quoting Prof Hossain, also a teacher of statistics department.

The professor received severe injuries in his head and hands, said Tonmoy Bhattacharya, deputy director of the hospital.

“We can say whether he is out of danger only after 24 hours,” he said.     

Police and the university sources could not ascertained the motive of the attack immediately.
