Suspect in AL worker murder killed in Khulna 'gunfight'
A man suspected in the murder of an Awami League activist was killed in a "gunfight" between his cohorts and police personnel in Dumuria upazila of Khulna early today.
The "gunfight" took place nearly four hours after the killing of Shahidul Islam, an AL man, reports a Khulna correspondent.
A group of criminals stabbed dead Islam at a bazaar in the upazila around 11:00pm last night, Shah Awlad Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dumuria Police Station, told The Daily Star.
Immediately after the murder, locals caught Sohan (full name not known immediately) from the spot and handed him over to policemen.
According to the information gleaned from Sohan, Dumuria police raided a place nearby the bazar, where the murder took place, around 3:00am to arrest the other killers and associates of Sohan.
Sensing police presence, miscreants opened fire targeting police, triggering a "gunfight", the police official said.
At one stage of the "gunfight", Sohan tried to flee the clutches of the lawmen and caught in line of fire.
After the "gunfight", police found the bullet-riddled body of Sohan.
Police recovered both the bodies and sent those to Khulna Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
