Supporters of abducted councillor block highway
Supporters of a ward councillor of Narayanganj City Corporation, who was abducted along with his four aides on Sunday, blocked Dhaka-Chittagong highway for nearly two hours today demanding immediate rescue of the five people.
Transport movement remained suspended on the highway until the people withdrew the blockade around 12:30pm, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
Nazrul Islam, councillor of ward 2, his four aides -- Tajul, Swapan, Liton and Jahangir – and driver, were kidnapped from Adalatpara area of the city around 1:45pm Sunday.
The supporters and relatives of Nazrul took to the streets and blocked the highway at Mouchak point around 10:45am, halting traffic movement, said Abdul Matin, officer-in-charge of Siddhirganj Police Station.
They also burnt tyres on the street also demanding immediate arrest of the Awami League leaders who have been made accused in a case filed in this connection yesterday.
The leaders are Nur Hossain, vice-president of Siddhirganj unit of Awami League, and its general secretary Yasin Mia.
They withdrew the blockade when police rushed there and convinced them to free the busy highway, the OC said.
The supporters of councillor also blockaded the highway yesterday and Saturday demanding the same.
Meanwhile, lawyers of Narayanganj Ainjibi Samiti boycotted the court demand information about their abducted fellow Chandan Kumar Sarkar and his driver, who were kidnapped hours after the abduction of Nazrul.
