SAARC officials meet to set agenda for bringing down tariffs

KATHMANDU, July 30 : The main South Asian regional group on Tuesday took new steps toward eliminating tariffs to boost trade in the region, reports AFP. Senior officials from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries began a three-day meeting here to set an agenda for bringing down tariffs. The inter-governmental group on trade liberalisation will make recommendations to the governments of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka on how to free up trade. 'American Corner' opens on IUB Ctg campus today

The American Centre of the US Embassy will inaugurate 'American Corner', a new resource centre, on the Chittagong campus of the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) at Jamal Khan Road today. Clarification of US envoy's remarks

Several press reports published yesterday inaccurately quoted US Ambassador Mary Ann Peters' comments following her meeting with Foreign Minister Morshed Khan in a way that suggested that Bangladeshi students studying in the US will not be affected by the new immigration registration procedures for Bangladeshi males over the age of 16. This is not what Ambassador Peters stated to the journalists at the Foreign Ministry, said a US embassy press release.

Danish embassy's donation for cold-hit people

The Danish Embassy yesterday donated Tk 2.4 million to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) to purchase blankets for distribution among the cold-hit people of the country.

During the last three weeks, the BDRCS has distributed blankets, warm clothes and high protein biscuits donated by the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) among 15,000 families in the northern districts.

The BDRCS youth groups are also distributing warm clothes in vulnerable areas of Dhaka over the last few days, said a press release.
