Students lock academic bldgs, block highway
Students of Pabna University of Science and Technology put the academic buildings under lock and key and blocked Dhaka-Pabna highway in Rajapur area yesterday, demanding immediate arrest of the attackers of a teacher.
They also confined the vice chancellor for hours, said Dr Habibullah, student adviser of the university.
On March 5, criminals equipped with sharp weapons swooped on dean of the faculty of Business Studies Dr Mushfikur Rahman, president of teachers association of the university and beat him up mercilessly when he was working at his office.
Protesting the attack, the agitating students boycotted classes and locked up the academic buildings yesterday morning. Later, they put up barricade on the highway, demanding punishment to the attackers of the teacher.
They also confined vice chancellor AL Nakib Chowdhury around 1:00pm to realise their demand.
We will go for tougher movement if the attackers were not arrested immediately, said Md Mahadi Hassan, a fourth year student of the university.
A case was filed in connection with the attack, said the VC, adding that somebody might have instigated the students to vitiate peaceful atmosphere of the university.
Officer in-charge of Pabna Sadar police station Kazi Haniful Islam said police were investigating the matter.
Later, the angry students withdrew the barricade following an assurance by the police of taking steps to arrest the attackers without much delay.
