Stop sand extraction from Sylhet river: HC
The High Court today directed the government to immediately take steps to stop extraction of sand, stone, marble, coal and other minerals from river Sari in Jaintapur area in Sylhet to save flow of its water and navigation.
In response to a writ petition, the court also issued a rule upon the government authorities to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to demarcate the area of the river and to declare it as an ecologically critical area.
The HC bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar came up with the order and rule after hearing the petition by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela).
Bela submitted the petition on Sunday to the HC saying that the river Sari at the entry point of Bangladesh is a tourism area, but its beauty, crystal clear water and navigation are becoming polluted and damaged due to extraction of sand, stone, marble, coal and other minerals by some traders.
During hearing of the petition today, Bela’s lawyer Iqbal Kabir Lytton prayed to the court to pass necessary orders to save the river and its beauty and navigation.
