Status quo on construction of CCC mayor’s house
The High Court today directed the authorities concerned to maintain status quo on the construction of a house for Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) mayor by cutting hills at the city’s Tigerpass area for the next seven days.
In response to a writ petition, the court also ordered the deputy commissioner of Chittagong and director (enforcement) of Department of Environment to visit the area and submit a report before it in seven days.
Moreover, the HC issued a rule upon the authorities concerned of the government and the CCC to explain as to why they should not be directed to stop hill cutting and to remove the construction materials from Tigerpass area.
The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman came up with the order and rule following the petition by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) saying that the CCC authorities have been constructing the house for its mayor without permission from the DoE.
At day’s hearing, petitioner’s lawyer Manzill Murshid prayed to the court to pass necessary orders to stop the construction and to protect the environment of the hills.
Manzill told The Daily Star that works for construction of the CCC mayor’s house will remain halted for the next seven days following the HC’s status quo order.
The HC fixed December 14 for passing further order on the issue, he added.
