Spring is in the air ...
Heralding the arrival of spring, the nation is all set to welcome Pahela Falgun today. Every year, people of the country celebrate the day to welcome the season of flowers -- symbolising youth, vigour and love. Dhaka residents as well as others in the country, donning ochre attire and floral garlands, will perform songs, dances, drama and poems to celebrate the day.
Jatiyo Boshonto Utshab Udjapon Parishad (JBUUP) has been celebrating the day through organising cultural programmes for the last two decades. This year, JBUUP will hold programmes at three separate venues – Charukala (Faculty of Fine Arts) of Dhaka University, Rabindra Sorobor, Dhanmondi and Bahadur Shah Park in old Dhaka.
The celebration of Pahela Falgun will feature classical music with dance, Pancha-kobi'r gaan, dance-drama, folk music, dance of indigenous people and poetry recitation. To add the spirit of Pahela Falgun, a colourful procession will be brought out enhancing the fanfare of the spring enthusiasts.
The Dhaka University area is the hub of all cultural activities. The “Bakultola” of the Faculty of Fine Arts is the primary spot where all the festivities begin.
The first phase of the programme at Bakultola will begin with AFM Akram presenting a classical instrument sitar at 7:00am. Srimonti Pooja Sengupta will present classical dance. The first phase will also feature choral song and dance performances by noted troupes and school including Chhayanaut, Surer Dhara, Rabindra Sangeet Shammilan Parishad, Sur Saptak, Nrityannandan, Nritym, Bhabna and Dhriti Nartanalay.
The second phase of the programme, starting at 3pm at the same venue, will include a Manipuri dance drama presentation. Artistic director of Shadhona, Lubna Mariam will direct the dance drama. Among other troupes, Surotirtha, Khelaghar, Bafa, Bashuria, Dibya Sangskritik Kendra, Angikam, Rewaz Performers' School and Geeti Shatodol will perform choral songs and dances.
Programmes at Rabindra Sorobor in Dhanmondi will start at 4pm. The cultural arrangement will almost be the same as Charukala while folk music, baul songs and folk dramas are the attractions of the programme to beheld at Bahadur Shah Park.
Many local bands will perform concerts at different points of the campus including TSC area.
Telecom operators Airtel Bangladesh Limited will also indulge in festivities to celebrate the day, with Bashanti Utshab, at the Army Museum Ground from 10 am to10 pm. Live musical performances by Ajob, Shunno and Airtel Young Stars Old School, Front line Poems, Tanvir and Upoma will feature at the venue. There will also be food competitions, street astrology, bioscope, monkey dance, fashion show, face painting, Nagordola and other traditional festivities.
