Sylhet leg from today
Defending champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club will take on Brothers Union while league leaders Abahani take on bottom-of-the-table Sheikh Russel KC as the eighth round of the JB Bangladesh Premier League kicks off at the Sylhet District Stadium today.
Sheikh Jamal, the two-time defending champions, have set the pace early in the league and sit on 15 points alongside Abahani, thanks to the excellent form of their foreign trio of Wedson Anselme, Emeka Darlington and Landing Darboe. Buoyed by the arrival of new coach Steffan Hanson, the Dhanmondi giants look to pounce on an unsettled Brothers side, who only tasted their first win in the last round after reinstating former coach Naeemuddin. The match will kick off at 4:30pm.
Abahani enjoyed a great start to the league as well, after having clinched the Independence Cup title, with four wins in seven matches. The charges of George Kottan will face former champions Sheikh Russel KC, who have suffered six straight defeats, including a 1-3 defeat against Brothers Union to ruin Shafiqul Islam Manik's debut at the dug-out. This fixture will get underway at 7:30pm.
Meanwhile, league organisers and the Sylhet District Football Association have taken various measures to attract larger crowds to the stadium. A concert was organised at the venue on Friday where folk singer and the league's brand ambassador Mumtaz Begum and popular band LRB performed in front of a sell-out crowd.
The Sylhet venue will host back-to-back legs up to October 1, featuring 12 matches during the first phase. The ticket prices for every match-day, which will feature two matches each, have been fixed at Tk 50.
