Brathwaite reveals sporting heroes
In an interview with Sky Sports, West Indies’ World Twenty20 hero Carlos Brathwaite spoke about his love for football and his idols within the game of cricket.
Asked whether cricket was his favoured sport, Brathwaite responded in the negative.
“My first love was football. The first team I supported was Fiorentina because of Rui Costa and Batigol’s [Gabriel Batistuta] number 10-number 9 partnership. That’s how I got my love for Portugal as a national team as well. Now I’m a big Cristiano Ronaldo fan and Manchester United fan as well.”
He then moved on to speaking about his cricketing heroes, ringing off a few names and saying why he admired them in a few words.
“Cricketwise my hero was Rahul Dravid at first. Back in school I was the number three batsman and all the stroke-makers would play around me. I would bat those long innings and be the one to stick it out. So it’s been a pleasure to share a dressing room without someone I’ve idolized my whole life. That was a blessing.
“And then Kevin Pietersen because of the way he bats and dominates bowlers. I was also always a fan of Glen McGrath. The way he held his line and lengths; he was so consistent that it was going to be either you or him. And he would prove that he could be more skillful than his opponent over a longer period of time. I really admire that,” Brathwaite continued.
“If I have to look at present day cricketers, that I look up to or idolize per se it would probably be Andre Russell. I see that his game and my game are quite similar and he has been able to achieve many things over the years. So he is one person I look up to and want to emulate.”
