BD given Youth Olympics berth
The Bangladesh youth hockey team got an opportunity to take part in October's Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires , Argentina as Australia pulled out of the five-a-side hockey tournament, allowing the third place finishers of the Asian Youth Olympic Qualifiers to progress in their place.
It was reported that Australia, the champions of Oceania, elected to participate in a Rugby tournament instead of hockey.
Bangladesh finished behind champions India and runners-up Malaysia in the qualifiers in April and thereby could not directly qualify for the Youth Olympics.
“A few days ago the director general of Bangladesh Olympic Association asked us to send the team member's names as the organizing committee gave Bangladesh a place in the tournament,” said Bangladesh Hockey Federation general secretary Abdus Sadeque yesterday.
Although Bangladesh finished last in the 10-team event's previous edition, Sadeque believes that this time the team have a good chance to produce better results.
