Adele a threat to Gabba?
England may have stumbled onto a secret weapon ahead of this year’s Ashes, with fears that singer Adele’s concerts in Brisbane could damage the Gabba wicket.
Cricket officials are hoping that the two concerts to be held at the Gabba by the English singer do not cause the wicket to need re-turfing -- which would take away the bounce which the surface has traditionally offered.
The wicket is supposed to be under cover for 11 days, with a metal covering built on top it last Saturday. In the worst case scenario, after Adele’s concert the entire wicket will have to be re-turfed -- something that last happened 17 years ago.
Almost two decades ago, the surface had to be re-turfed for the Sydney Olympics when the venue was reconfigured for Olympic football.
After that, the character of the wicket completely changed and it took nearly 15 years for the famously bouncy surface to regain its essence.
“It is too early to know what will happen,” Gabba curator Kevin Mitchell said.
“We will just have to wait until they lift the stuff up next week.”
