Acclaimed shooter Sadia in burn unit
2010 South Asian Games gold medalist shooter Syeda Sadia Sultana is now being treated at the burn unit of the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery of Dhaka Medical College after an accident at her Chittagong residence a week ago.
Sadia, a member of Bangladesh's gold medal winning team in 10m air rifle event at the 2010 SA Games, burnt her body while cooking at her home on October 15. She was rushed to the Chittagong Medical College and Hospital immediately before being transferred to the Dhaka Medical College on Thursday.
"It happened seven days [actually six days ago] in Chittagong. She has suffered deep burn, almost 20 per cent of her body has been burn and hence she is not out of danger. She will need a surgery to remove the dead skin. We will try our best to cure her," Dr. Samanta Lal Sen, coordinator of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said yesterday when contacted over phone.
Sadia, also a member of Bangladesh's gold winning team in the 2010 Commonwealth Shooting Championship, was admitted at the High Dependency Unit of the burn unit yesterday as she was facing breathing problem due to deep burns to her face, neck and chest.
The shooter had taken a long leave from the game after the 2013 Bangladesh Games. She was suffering from depression for some time, her brother Syed Sajjadullah, a former national badminton champion, said.
Sajjadullah also informed that his sister had undergone counseling, and on suggestions of the counselors, the family had held her akd (nikaah) two months ago.
"She wanted to continue her studies and took a gap from the game. But she didn't get the required support from the shooting federation regarding her wish to take a break. She also left the Chittagong Rifles Club after the club suspended her monthly salary due to not taking part in a national championship. These things frustrated her and she eventually suffered from long depression. We even arranged counseling for her and we arranged her marriage on suggestion of the counselors," Sajjadullah said when contacted.
