101-year-old takes gold in 100m sprint
A 101-year-old woman stormed to the gold medal in the World Masters Game in Auckland.
India's Man Kaur from Chandigarh crossed the line in one minute and 14 seconds, just 64 seconds off Usain Bolt's 100m world record, as she took gold.
Some of the shine may be taken off her achievement seeing as she was the only entrant in the 100-years-and-over bracket, Kaur had no previous sporting experience and she plans to stage a return next year.
"I enjoyed it and am very, very happy," the Daily Mail quoted her as saying after the race. "I'm going to run again, I'm not going to give up. I will participate, there's no full stop."
Kaur had to go through a stringent process which included a full medical check-up, but she was given the green light to participate in the event which attracted about 25,000 athletes.
World Masters Games 2017 chief executive Jennah Wootten said the organisers were ecstatic to have hosted such an inspirational figure.
"Man Kaur truly personifies the 'sport for all' philosophy which World Masters Games is all about and we are thrilled to have her here," she said.
"I have no doubt that she and many of the other 24,905 athletes competing in these games are inspiring others to lead more active lifestyles and take up a sport."
