Illegal sand lifter fined

A man was fined Tk.10,000 for illegal lifting sand illegally from a river in Phulbari upazila on Friday afternoon. The man was identified as Bidyut Hossain, son of Ali Hossain, of Nayanpur village under Birampur upazila of Dinajpur. A mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Md. Moniruzzaman also UNO of Phulbari upazila of Dinajpur raided Chhoto Jamuna River in the upazila on Friday afternoon and caught Bidyut red handed.
Two Jamaat leaders held

Police arrested two Jamaat leaders from Sadullapur and Phulchari Upazila on Friday night. On a secret information, Sadullapur police in a drive arrested Sajjadur Rahman of village Krishnapur, a Jamaat activist of Bhatgram union on Friday night in connection with cases filed for election violence. On the same night, Phulchari police arrested Jamaat leader Yusuf Mia from Phulchari bazaar on similar charges.
Youths jailed for stalking

Two college students were jailed by a mobile court yesterday for one year for stalking female students of same institution. The convicted students were identified as Shukh Dev and Md. Oliullah, of class XII at Akkel Ali Howlader College in Patuakhali town. Police said, both the students were disturbing some female students by sending messages over cell phone and also sexually harassing them. On allegation, police arrested them and put them before a mobile court.
Girl rescued from brothel

Police in a drive rescued a 13-year-old girl from Daulatdia brothel in Goalanda upazila early Friday. Sources at Goalanda police station said, a team of police raided the brothel around 3:00am and rescued the minor girl following a case filed by her mother. They arrested a sex worker on charge of selling the girl to the brothel through deception.
Hartal observed in Laxmipur

An eight-hour-long hartal, enforced by the local unit of BNP, protesting detention of its Sadar upazila (east) unit organising secretary M Omar Faruk allegedly by Rab members, passed off peacefully in the district yesterday. In the morning, BNP activists brought out a procession in Uttar Temuhani area of the district town in support of the strike. Presence of vehicles was thin on the roads and most of the business houses kept their shutters down. No long-route bus left the district bus terminal in the morning. Victim's wife Parveen Akhter alleged that a group of people, numbering 6-7 identifying themselves as Rab members, picked up Omar Faruk, also chairman of Hazirpara union parishad, from Katgar area under Patenga police station in Chittagong city early Wednesday.
Man electrocuted

A septuagenarian man died from electrocution and four boys were injured at Begunbari in Gomostapur upazila on Friday. The deceased was identified as Emaz Uddin,70, a resident of Karnakhali Mirzapur village in Shibganj upazila. Witnesses said, a live electric wire got snapped and fell on the building of a local mosque in the area at the time of Juma'a prayers at about 1:00pm. At one stage, Emaz Uddin came in touch with the electric wire while going to attend prayers and died on the spot. Four boys, including Sohel, 10, Shaheen, 12, Aminul, 11, and Al-Amin, 7, were injured during the incident.
