‘Smuggler’ killed in Satkhira police firing
An alleged smuggler was killed as detectives after being attacked by smugglers opened fire in Satkhira Sadar upazila last night.
The deceased is Manir Hossain, 27, son of Rajab Ali of Kalyani village in Sadar upazila, reports our Satkhira correspondent quoting Kamal Hossain, information officer at the office of district Superintendent of Police.
Two police officials -- Aminul Islam, assistant sub-inspector (detectives); and constable Abdur Rahim – were beaten and stabbed by the smugglers, the official said.
They were whisked off to Satkhira General Hospital for treatment from where Abdur Rahim was transferred to Khulna for better treatment.
A team of detectives led by SI Eunus Ali, conducted a drive at local Ghazalia bill at Sikri frontier around 9:00pm after receiving information that a gang is smuggling Phensidyle in the country from India.
Sensing their presence, the gang left the scene dividing into groups leaving some bottles of Phensidyl on the spot.
Later, the gang regrouped and attacked the law enforcers forcing them to fire back, Kamal Hossain said.
Manir was shot by bullets fired by the law enforcers, he added.
But, Manir managed to flee from spot and took shelter at a nearby residence from where police detained him later.
He was soon rushed to Satkhira General Hospital where doctors declared him “brought dead” around 4:00am, said Moazzam Hossain, a physician of the hospital.
