Small water transports asked to stop plying
Barisal port authorities have banned plying of motor launches and other small water transports up to 65 feet in length on 22 routes of Barisal region until further order.
The step was taken after weather department asked the river-port authorities to hoist cautionary weather signal no. 2 from yesterday morning following heavy rainfall, said Abul Bashar Mazumdar, deputy director of river safety and traffic management of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authorities (BIWTA) office in Barisal.
Barisal met office recorded 55.3 millimeter rainfall in last 12 hours and 77.7 ml in 24 hours till 12:00 noon yesterday.
This condition may continue till new moon on Tuesday, weather officials said.
Md Shahidullah, deputy director of BIWTA and Barisal River Port officer, said river port authorities stopped plying of small water transports due to inclement weather and rough river condition in the region since yesterday morning.
Triple deck Barisal-Dhaka bound launches have also been asked to ply cautiously, he said.
Coastal areas also hoisted weather signal no.3 at Kalapara. Squally weather may affect the maritime ports and coastal areas, said Prodip Kumar, officer of Kalapara weather radar station.
All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to come close to the coast for taking safe shelters and proceed with caution till further notice, the port and weather officials informed.
